An American diplomat who police say was speeding crossed the center line in his SUV and rammed into a full mini-bus, killing a father of three whose widow is six months pregnant, officials said Friday.</div>

U.S. Embassy officials in Nairobi rushed the American and his family out of Kenya the next day, leaving the crash victims with no financial assistance to pay for a funeral and for hospital bills for the eight or so others who were seriously injured.</div>

Latifah Naiman Mariki, 38 and whose husband was killed in the crash, was almost evicted from her house this week after her landlord demanded rent. Mariki's deceased husband, Haji Lukindo, was the family's only source of income. Mariki told The Associated Press that neither the American driver nor anyone at the U.S. Embassy has contacted her, and she doesn't know how she will provide for her soon-to-be-born child and three children, ages 20, 10 and 7.</div>

"It is difficult for me to handle this matter because my kids need to go to school. They need everything, basic needs," Mariki said. "And we have no place to stay because we have to pay the rent. We have no money. ... Even if my kids are sick I have no money to take them to hospital."</div>

Hilary Renner, a State Department spokeswoman in Washington, said the embassy extends its deepest condolences Mariki's family and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured. She said she couldn't comment on whether embassy employee would return to Kenya.</div>

"The embassy is fully cooperating with the Kenyan authorities as they investigate the accident and work to aid the victims," she said.</div>

The American driver of the SUV, Joshua Walde, was an information management officer at the Nairobi embassy when he got in the crash on his way home the evening of July 11. He gave a statement to police but because he has diplomatic immunity he was not detained.</div>

A police dossier on the case shown briefly to an Associated Press reporter contained sketches of how police believe the accident happened. The sketch shows the American's SUV turning at a rounded four-way intersection on the edge of Nairobi and driving into the lane of oncoming traffic.</div>

Pictures in the dossier show that the SUV hit the front corner and side of the mini-bus, smashing in its frame. Kenyan mini-buses, known as matatus, also frequently drive fast and erratically.</div>

It's impressive that baby Jasleen was delivered without a C-section — but was it safe?</div>
<div>
Since entering the world at 13.47 pounds last Friday, baby Jasleen has made headlines and records. Jasleen was delivered vaginally at University Hospital in Leipzig, making her the largest baby in the country to be delivered without a cesarean section.</div>

However, while people have been cooing over the giant bundle of joy and marveling that her mother, Maria, delivered her vaginally, is it safe for a baby to be that large and be delivered without a C-section?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

The answer, generally speaking, is no. But the circumstances in this case are complicated by the reason behind baby Jasleen’s girth: Her mother had been suffering from an undiagnosed case of gestational diabetes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Gestational diabetes is usually tested for between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. It is very treatable, often with just monitoring the mother’s blood sugar and bringing in diet and exercise changes. In fact, insulin medicine is recommended for only 10 to 20 percent of women with gestational diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.</div>

When it is left untreated, though, the extra glucose in the mother’s bloodstream crosses the placenta to trigger the baby’s pancreas to make insulin. As a result, the baby grows to an unhealthily large size, a condition known as fetal macrosomia, which is somewhat arbitrarily defined at a threshold of 8 pounds, 13 ounces — a threshold that Jasleen well exceeds.</div>

Generally, babies with fetal macrosomia are delivered via C-section. Due to their large size, there is greater likelihood for shoulder dystocia, which is when a baby’s shoulder cannot fit through the mother’s pelvis and the baby gets caught in the birth canal. Dr. Elizabeth G. Baxley and Dr. Robert W. Gobbo at the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) call it "one of the most frightening emergencies in the delivery room," in part because a trapped baby may not be able to breath.</div>

Yet, despite the evidence in favor of a C-section, the doctors at University Hospital were not necessarily wrong in their decision to naturally deliver Jasleen. According to a hospital statement by chief of obstetrics Holger Stepan, "We decided to try natural birth, as a child of this size [with] the excess weight of the mother, a cesarean section would have been associated with a significant risk." Though fairly routine, "C-sections can be risky for both the baby and the mother," notes James Fleur at Science Recorder. Possible problems include blood clots for the mother and breathing problems for the baby.</div>

Moreover, since Jasleen’s mother had never been previously treated at the hospital, the physicians were unaware of her gestational diabetes and likely could not anticipate how large a baby Jasleen would be. And it’s not unheard of to vaginally deliver a baby of that size. Just this March, British baby George King was delivered vaginally, clocking in at 15 pounds 7 ounces.</div>

At the moment, though, baby Jasleen is doing well and being cared for in the hospital’s neonatal unit. Her mother is also doing quite well, though still recovering from the shock of her big surpise. She told the Daily Mail, "I had no idea there was such a giant inside of me."</div>

The Eagles quarterback forgave Cooper only hours after his public apology for using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert in Philadelphia this June. Vick left no room for misinterpretation at a time when subtlety would have been seen as veiled anger:</div>

"As a team we understood because we all make mistakes in life and we all do and say things that maybe we do mean and maybe we don't mean," Vick said Wednesday. "But as a teammate I forgave him. We understand the magnitude of the situation. We understand a lot of people may be hurt and offended, but I know Riley Cooper. I know him as a man. I've been with him for the last three years and I know what type of person he is. That's what makes it easy, and at the same time, hard to understand. But easy to forgive him."</div>

What Cooper said can and still may create a huge rift in a locker room, and in the community. It may be "easy to forgive" for some, but certainly not for others. Vick's own brother, Marcus, took to Twitter to call for a bounty on Cooper's head, offering money to the first defender who lays him out in a game. Let's face it: A lot of people want to see that happen.</div>

Yet Michael Vick shushed his own brother, cautioning him against showing his own "ignorance." </div>

"I don't agree with what my brother is saying," he said. "Riley is still my teammate and he just stood in front of us and apologized for what he said. Somewhere deep down you've got to find some level of respect for that."</div>

At the end of another upsetting summer for the NFL, in which both players and coaches embarrassed themselves off the field, it's time to celebrate a redemption story. Michael Vick, once among the most despised athletes in sports after being convicted as part of a sick dogfighting ring, is now a mature leader of a major pro franchise. The name on the back of his jersey is no longer just a four-letter word.</div>

Whether he can be a winning quarterback in Philadelphia is a debate for next month. The focus for now should be on how Vick served his punishment, sought out help from men like Tony Dungy, found a new start with a new team, and grew into a place where teammates look to him for guidance. Even a jobs program in a rough part of Cincinnati used Vick as a positive example for those who have made mistakes in their lives. </div>

Nothing can undo the pain Vick inflicted on those dogs, but his personal growth since then is notable, bordering on remarkable.</div>

Vick didn't show off when he won games in Philly, and he didn't sulk when Nick Foles took his starter's job last season. There have been no outbursts, no middle fingers thrust at fans. The only headlines Vick has made since his dogfighting conviction have been football headlines. And now this headline.</div>

Nobody would have blamed Vick for being angry or silent on this issue. What Cooper said was disgusting and an affront to African-Americans (and others). Marcus Vick had a reaction that many would likely have. Michael Vick's reaction was nobler. It was based not in the heat of the moment but the health of the team in the long-term. </div>

And it was based in religion. A lot of fans and media don't like conflating religion and sports, but here it's relevant and important. Vick seems to have found a new strength in Christianity since coming out of jail, and that strength was reflected in his comments Wednesday. What Vick said was mirrored by the remarks made by another African-American on the team, Jason Avant. The wide receiver is deeply religious, and he reached out to Vick immediately when the quarterback joined the team three years ago.</div>
