 Florida lawmakers will hold hearings this fall on the state's "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law, which has become a lightning rod for criticism following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.<br />

The announcement on Friday by Will Weatherford, the speaker of Florida's House of Representatives, marked the biggest concession yet by the state's Republican leaders to protesters' demands for a top-to-bottom review of the law, which allows people in fear of serious injury to use deadly force to defend themselves rather than retreat.<br />
<br />
Since Zimmerman's acquittal on July 13, Martin's grieving parents, backed by African-American civic leaders, celebrities, students and political figures, including President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, have all said the Stand Your Ground law needs to be re-examined.<br />
<br />
Weatherford, in an opinion column published in the Tampa Tribune, said he had asked Representative Matt Gaetz, a fellow Republican who chairs the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee, to lead the hearings. Weatherford did not set a date for the hearings or say how long they would last.<br />
<br />
"Across Florida, representatives are receiving calls, letters, visits and emails from constituents with diverse opinions on 'Stand Your Ground,'" Weatherford said. "Passions are high, but every person has the right to express their views on this matter of great importance."<br />
<br />
"It's a critical step," said Phillip Agnew, who heads a group of young demonstrators calling themselves the Dream Defenders who have staged a nearly month-long sit-in outside Governor Rick Scott's office in a bid to change the law. "We're excited about having an open debate," he told Reuters.<br />
<br />
Advocates of the law, the first of its kind in<br />
 the country and now copied in more than 20 other states, say violent crime has fallen since it was enacted.<br />
<br />
But critics see the self-defense law as emblematic of racial bias and unequal justice in America, since some studies have shown that defense claims made under the law are far more likely to be successful when the victim is black.<br />
<br />
Two of the six jurors in the Zimmerman case have said the Stand Your Ground law left them with no option but to acquit him.<br />
<br />
"Our evaluation of its (the law's) effectiveness should be guided by objective information, not by political expediency," Weatherford wrote.<br />
<br />
The poll found that a strong majority of white voters and men support the laws, while black voters generally oppose them and women are almost evenly divided.</div>

The State Department on Friday put Americans worldwide on notice for possible terrorist threats, citing the Middle East and North Africa as particular danger spots and suggesting strikes could take place or originate in the Arabian Peninsula.</div>

At this year's Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, hackers have turned their attention to the home - showing how to control everything from burglar alarms to TVs.<br />

The annual Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas is a Mecca for hackers - where security researchers and self-styled hackers show off vulnerabilities in everything from PCs to hotel door lock systems.<br />
<br />
This year, hackers have turned their attention on the home - hacking everything from door locks to burglar alarms to televisions. One group even showed how to hack an electronic toilet.<br />
<br />
One researcher showed off an Ocean’s Eleven-style hack that allows people to “replace” the video in surveillance cameras.<br />
<br />
<b>Is your smart TV watching you? </b><br />
<br />
“Smart TVs” - internet-connected televisions - can be hacked, according to researcher SeungJin Lee, allowing attackers to “watch” families through webcams, and working even if the victims try to turn the set off.<br />
<br />
More than 80 million Smart TVs sold around the world in 2012, Lee says - but, “we hardly see security research on Smart TVs.” Lee showed off an attack on a Samsung television that allowed him to insert fake news stories into a Smart TV’s internet browser.<br />
<br />
<b>Hacking your front door</b><br />
<br />
There are 200,000 “home automation systems” in UK homes, allowing people to unlock their front door with a touch of a button - but researchers warn that it’s all too easy for hackers to do the same.<br />
<br />
 “Connecting things to a network opens up a whole range of vectors of attack, and when you are talking door locks, garage doors, and alarm controls it gets scary,” says Trustwave consultant Daniel Crowley. “If someone can access your home network, but doesn’t have a key to your home, they can still unlock your door and get in,” Crowley said of what he found in gear on the market.<br />

All  hacker needs to do is break into a home network - either through badly protected wireless routers, or malware on a PC.<br />

H&M’s been hedging on the promise made three years ago to offer its of-the-moment apparel and accessories to masses of fashionistas living far from one of its 268 U.S. locations. In 2011, H&M dipped a toe into the e-tailing waters, selling selected pieces from its Fall collection via fashion magazine Elle’s website.</div>

Though the items sold out in short order, the company hesitated to roll out a dedicated online store, citing that it needed more time to iron out any possible kinks that could hinder secure shopping, receiving payments, and work out any supply chain issues.</div>

Postponing turned out to be prescient as the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh and subsequent deaths of over 1,000 workers, put H&M in the spotlight. Not for having garments produced on that site, but for its outsized presence in a country that still offers its garment workers the lowest minimum wage.</div>

H&M’s Helena Helmersson spoke to FORBES shortly before the collapse about steps the fast fashion retailer was taking to ensure workers were treated fairly. Shortly after the tragedy, H&M led a group of retailers to sign a safety agreement. That move inspired brand loyalty among customers who still wanted to shop, but were feeling twinges of guilt about the conditions in which their trendy threads were made.</div>

Today, H&M officially hit the switch without much fanfare. Just an announcement made on Twitter and Facebook FB +1.87% to some 17 million followers. The company also plans to mail print catalogues starting in the Fall. Kulle estimated that the four channels will reach 300 million people in the U.S. but declined to project sales.</div>

FBI officials have concluded that the agency could not have done more to prevent April's Boston Marathon attacks, law enforcement officials told The New York Times.</div>

The FBI previously faced criticism regarding how it handled a 2011 request from a Russian intelligence agency to keep tabs on Tamerlan Tsarneav, who would later be accused in the bombing along with his younger brother, Dzokhar Tsarnaev.</div>

The Russian agency suspected that Tsarnaev had been "radicalized" since immigrating to the United States from the Republic of Dagestan, according to the Times.</div>

FBI agents did investigate Tsarnaev, and wound up concluding that there was no evidence he had been radicalized.</div>

<div>
According to multiple internal reviews examining the investigation, agents were unable to investigate Tsarnaev more thoroughly due to federal law and other restrictions imposed by the Justice Department. The review notes that agents are prohibited from wiretapping on an investigation of that type, according to the Times.</div>

The Agency also came under fire for not following up on Tsarnaev after he returned from visiting Russia in 2012. According to the Times, it's unclear whether the FBI even knew Tsarnaev went to Russia at all.</div>

Since the Boston Marathon attacks, Homeland Security and the FBI have both implemented measures to ensure they will receive notification when a former investigation subject travels overseas. However, an unidentified official who spoke with the Times stated that even if "these adjustments [had] been in existence before the attacks, the outcome would likely not have been any different."</div>

Struggling to salvage a massive surveillance program, President Barack Obama faced congressional critics of the National Security Agency's collection of Americans' telephone records Thursday as snowballing concerns made new limitations on the intelligence effort appear increasingly likely.</div>

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden joined lawmakers on both sides of the issue for an Oval Office meeting designed to stem the bleeding of public support and show Obama was serious about engaging. Among the participants were the NSA's most vigorous congressional supporters — the top Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate intelligence panels — alongside its most stern critics, including Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mark Udall of Colorado.</div>

The lawmakers departed the rainy White House grounds without speaking to reporters. But in interviews later, they said there was a consensus that the surveillance efforts are suffering from perception problems that have undercut trust among the American people.</div>

"There is openness to making changes," said Rep. C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.</div>

Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, top Republican on the Senate's intelligence panel and a strong NSA defender, said Obama and the lawmakers didn't agree to take specific steps but brought up a number of proposals that will be fleshed out over the August congressional recess.</div>

"A lot of ideas were thrown out," Chambliss told The Associated Press. "Nothing was concluded."</div>

Wyden, in an interview, said he and Udall had sought to convince Obama of the urgency of addressing rising concerns. He said he proposed strengthening the government's ability to get emergency authorization to collect an individual's phone records, so that pre-emptive collection of everyone's records would no longer be necessary.</div>

"I felt that the president was open to ideas — and we're going to make sure he has some," Wyden said after returning to Capitol Hill.</div>

Wyden and two Senate colleagues also unveiled legislation Thursday to overhaul the secret federal court that oversees the programs, which critics decry as largely a rubber stamp. The senators aim to make the court created under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, more adversarial by creating a special advocate who could argue for privacy during closed-door proceedings and appeal decisions. A companion bill would diversify the court's bench by ending the chief justice's sole authority to pick its judges.</div>

"These bills do not compromise national security, but they put a necessary opposing view in the FISA court and assure ideological diversity of judges," said Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M. Another of the bill's sponsors, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said the Obama administration was receptive to the ideas, although White House officials declined to comment.</div>

The more information about the programs the government has released, the more it has fed even greater concerns about the scope of the surveillance and whether Obama's national security team has been truthful in describing it publicly in the past.</div>

After the administration on Wednesday declassified more documents about an email mining program, Wyden said they showed the government had "repeatedly made inaccurate statements to Congress" about the effectiveness in countering terrorism. And new details released about the phone records program created new fodder for critics by confirming for the first time that, when investigating one suspected terrorist, the government can also examine records of people who called people who called the targeted individual — netting millions of people's records in a single request.</div>

Meanwhile, the head of the NSA openly clashed with lawmakers including Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., over the agency's statements that telephone and email data collection helped foil 54 terror plots.</div>

Rising tensions have stoked concern at the White House that surveillance programs Obama considers crucial will soon be undermined or even dismantled — despite the fact that many Democrats and Republicans in Congress have come to the NSA's defense.</div>

Leahy, the Judiciary Committee chairman, has threatened to seek to end the phone records program if it's not proven effective. And Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., signaled Thursday that unless an agreement is reached on releasing more of the secret court's opinions, he would push Congress to use its "power of the purse" to compel their disclosure by withholding funding for certain programs.</div>

"Diana was madly in love with Hasnat Khan and wanted to marry him, even if that meant living in Pakistan," said Jemima Khan, a friend to the princess, of no relation to the surgeon.</div>

The Princess of Wales reportedly spent a lot of time trying to get to know members of the Khan family with the intent to quietly marry into it, which was not entirely acceptable.</div>

The researchers, from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, found that negative attitudes to people with mental health problems were a factor in the rise in unemployment.</div>

The study said: "Living in a country where a higher proportion of individuals believe that individuals with mental illness are dangerous was associated with a higher likelihood of unemployment for people with mental health problems, but did not influence employment rates for those without mental health problems."</div>

It is thought that unemployed people with mental health problems may also be less likely to seek help and and may need specific outreach support.</div>
<div>

Dr Sara Evans-Locko, lead study author and lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, said the study did not have unemployment rates for individual EU countries. She suggested the trend was a general one across Europe which was not specific to any one culture.</div>

"During a recession people who already have mental health problems find their economic and social position gets worse.</div>

<div>
"We don't exactly know why, but it's harder for people to get a job if there's already a gap on their CV and if employers need to cut staff then these people might be more vulnerable."</div>

The danger is that economic hardship can intensify the social exclusion of vulnerable people, such as those with mental health problems, the study said.</div>

Hart's address was listed as Locust Avenue, the scene of the shootings that Shaffer said "was directly related to drug activity."</div>

Actor Wes Studi, who appeared in "Dances with Wolves" and "The Last of the Mohicans," was arrested early Friday for aggravated drunken driving in New Mexico, authorities said.</div>

According to a criminal complaint, Studi, 66, was arrested around 1 a.m. while at a stop sign in Santa Fe. The actor was in a 2005 black Volvo with two front tires blown out, Santa Fe police said.</div>

Before officers arrived, a witness saw Studi try to "repair the vehicle's damaged tires in the middle of the road without the vehicle lights on," the complaint said.</div>

<div>
When an officer asked Studi to step out of the car, the actor "needed to use the vehicle to keep his balance and then stumbled to (the officer's) patrol vehicle," the document states.</div>
<div>
Officers at the scene said Studi's speech was slurred and his breath smelled of alcohol.</div>

Police also said he was "combative and confused" and couldn't tell officers where he was headed or what he had hit to cause the tire blowouts.</div>

Santa Fe police spokeswoman Celina Westervelt said Studi refused breath, field-sobriety and blood tests. He was booked into jail on an aggravated DWI charge.</div>

Studi was being held Friday on $3,000 bond, according to police, who didn't immediately know if he had a lawyer.</div>

It’s been just over a week since Detroit filed for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history and, so far, there are more questions than answers about how this will all shake out. On Wednesday, a U.S. Bankruptcy judge ruled Detroit’s Chapter 9 filing can proceed but local unions, pension funds and other creditors will continue to try and stop the process.</div>

Regardless of how the legal proceedings unfold, Meredith Whitney thinks she knows what will happen as a result of Detroit’s bankruptcy filing: “staggering aftershocks” for the muni bond market and “important precedents” for other state and local governments.</div>

“We know [Detroit’s bankruptcy] is a game-changing event for certain,” says Whitney, author of Fate of the States and founder of Meredith Whitney Advisory Group LLC. “It will galvanize other municipalities to either get their act together or follow Detroit’s lead.”</div>

<div>
Asked what other municipalities might follow Detroit’s lead into bankruptcy, Whitney cited the five other Michigan cities currently under emergency management: Flint, Pontiac, Ecorse, Allen Park and Benton Harbor. She also reiterated her concerns about the states of New Jersey and Illinois.</div>

The Wall Street Journal recently cited Oakland, Philadelphia and Chicago as other big cities with the potential to follow Detroit’s lead but Whitney declined to mention other cities.</div>

“I’m not sure it’s constructive to name towns [and] sound the alarm,” she said. “But there are numerous others across the country. Detroit is hardly unique.”</div>

Of course, Whitney gained increased attention – and considerable criticism – when she sounded the alarm on 60 Minutes in late 2010. At that time, she predicted “a spate of municipal bond defaults. You could see 50 sizeable defaults. Fifty to 100 sizeable defaults. </div>

Nothing close to that level of muni bankruptcies has occurred, to date, but ask yourself: Was Whitney 'dead wrong' on 60 Minutes, as her critics continue to claim, or just early?</div>

Prosecutors say 34-year-old Nathanael Sloop and his wife malnourished and abused the boy for days until he died in May 2010. Sloop is accused of using a hammer to disfigure Ethan Stacy's face and burying his body in the northern Utah mountains.</div>

The Salt Lake Tribune reports () Second District Judge Glen Dawson on Thursday ordered Sloop to stand trial on charges of aggravated murder, child abuse, obstruction of justice and desecration of a body. Prosecutors say they plan to seek the death penalty against Sloop.</div>

Sloop's defense attorneys are challenging the law which prosecutors are using to seek the death penalty. The law allows prosecutors to pursue capital punishment in a killing that resulted from child abuse, kidnapping or sexual assault. Prosecutors do not have to prove the killing was intentional – only a "reckless indifference to human life."</div>

Defense attorney Richard Mauro said Thursday that the law is unclear and poorly written.</div>
