Motorola Mobility unveiled Thursday its much-anticipated Moto X smartphone, marking the Libertyville-based company’s first flagship product launch since its acquisition by Google last year.</div>

The new device, introduced at a press event in New York, comes with a 4.7-inch display and a feature where a simple twist of the wrist activates the camera. It’s also accompanied by massive expectations for a company that’s weathered many painful restructurings and predictions of its demise. While the Libertyville-based company introduced last week three new smartphones for Verizon Wireless’ Droid line, the Moto X represents the “culmination of this new year for Motorola as a subsidiary of Google,” Motorola Chief Executive Dennis Woodside told the Tribune in an interview.</div>

"It's the first device that was built really from scratch -- literally from a whiteboard -- post Google’s acquisition of Motorola," Woodside said. "We really spent the last year retooling the company to become much more focused…really getting Motorola back to its roots of innovation."</div>

One of the defining characteristics of Moto X is its ability to be customized. Some of this is aesthetic, as consumers can choose from a palette of colors for the phone’s back plate, front plate and other hardware parts. The company said more than 2,000 combinations are possible. Woodside said consumers like choices and pointed to fashion, such as the NikeiD program that allows people to design their own shoes, as an example.</div>

The customization is woven throughout the Moto X’s hardware and software. The device responds to voice commands without draining a lot of battery and is integrated with Google Now, a personal assistant feature that understands natural language. It can answer questions and provide recommendations. This technology is also present on the new Droid phones released for Verizon last week.</div>

"Google invented the self-driving car," Woodside said. 'You can think of the Moto X as a self-driving phone."</div>

The industry will be closely watching the Moto X as a gauge of whether Google has successfully reshaped Motorola into a maker of cutting-edge mobile technology. The company has substantial ground to reclaim before it even makes a dent in worldwide smartphone shipments, which are dominated by Apple and Samsung. According to data tracker IDC, Motorola’s second-quarter market share is 1 percent or less. During the same period, IDC measured Samsung’s market share at 30.4 percent and Apple at 13.1 percent.</div>

The 25-year-old royal footman who helped announce the birth of Britain's Prince George<br />
 has returned home to India.<br />

Badar Azim joined Queen Elizabeth II's press secretary at Buckingham Palace's front court on July 22 to post the traditional bulletin announcing the birth of the third in line to the British throne.<br />
<br />
On Wednesday, Azim returned to his home in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata after his work visa expired.<br />
<br />
He told India's New Delhi Television on Thursday that announcing the prince's birth was an "amazing" experience and that one day he would love to return to work at the palace.<br />
<br />
Azim said he did not seek a visa extension and wanted to spend time with his family after being away for four years.<br />
<br />
"If I have a new visa, then why not," he said of possibly returning to work at the palace. "It would be a privilege to work with the royal household."<br />
<br />
Azim's parents, who like millions of people were glued to their TV ahead of the royal birth, said they were extremely proud of their son. A day after the prince was born, many newspapers carried photographs of Azim walking at Buckingham Palace with the press secretary, Alisa Anderson, carrying the birth announcement.<br />
<br />
For now, Azim is back in the one-room apartment he shares with his parents and brothers, returning in time to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid, NDTV reported.<br />
<br />
His father, an iron welder, struggled to put Azim and his siblings through school.</div>

Struggling to salvage a massive surveillance program, President Barack Obama faced congressional critics of the National Security Agency's collection of Americans' telephone records Thursday as snowballing concerns made new limitations on the intelligence effort appear increasingly likely.</div>

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden joined lawmakers on both sides of the issue for an Oval Office meeting designed to stem the bleeding of public support and show Obama was serious about engaging. Among the participants were the NSA's most vigorous congressional supporters — the top Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate intelligence panels — alongside its most stern critics, including Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mark Udall of Colorado.</div>

The lawmakers departed the rainy White House grounds without speaking to reporters. But in interviews later, they said there was a consensus that the surveillance efforts are suffering from perception problems that have undercut trust among the American people.</div>

"I felt that the president was open to ideas — and we're going to make sure he has some," Wyden said after returning to Capitol Hill.</div>

Wyden and two Senate colleagues also unveiled legislation Thursday to overhaul the secret federal court that oversees the programs, which critics decry as largely a rubber stamp. The senators aim to make the court created under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, more adversarial by creating a special advocate who could argue for privacy during closed-door proceedings and appeal decisions. A companion bill would diversify the court's bench by ending the chief justice's sole authority to pick its judges.</div>

"Diana was madly in love with Hasnat Khan and wanted to marry him, even if that meant living in Pakistan," said Jemima Khan, a friend to the princess, of no relation to the surgeon.</div>

The Princess of Wales reportedly spent a lot of time trying to get to know members of the Khan family with the intent to quietly marry into it, which was not entirely acceptable.</div>

National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden left the transit zone of a Moscow airport and entered Russia after authorities granted him asylum for one year, his lawyer said Thursday.<br />

Anatoly Kucherena said that Snowden's whereabouts will be kept secret for security reasons. The former NSA systems analyst was stuck at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since his arrival from Hong Kong on June 23.<br />
<br />
"He now is one of the most sought after men in the world," Kucherena told reporters at the airport. "The issue of security is very important for him."<br />
<br />
The U.S. has demanded that Russia send Snowden home to face prosecution for espionage, but President Vladimir Putin dismissed the request.<br />
<br />
Putin had said that Snowden could receive asylum in Russia on condition he stops leaking U.S. secrets. Kucherena has said Snowden accepted the condition.<br />
<br />
The Guardian newspaper on Wednesday published a new report on U.S. intelligence-gathering based on information from Snowden, but Kucherena said the material was provided before Snowden promised to stop leaking.<br />
<br />
Snowden, who revealed details of a U.S. intelligence program to monitor Internet activity, has received offers of asylum from Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia and said he would like to visit those countries. However, the logistics of reaching any of those countries are complicated because his U.S. passport has been revoked.<br />
<br />
Snowden's father said in remarks broadcast Wednesday on Russian television that he would like to visit his son. Kucherena said he is arranging the trip.<br />
<br />
The lawyer has said earlier that the temporary asylum would allow Snowden to travel freely around Russia, but wouldn't allow him to leave the country. The one-year asylum can be extended.<br />
<br />
WikiLeaks, a group which has adopted Snowden's cause, said its legal adviser Sarah Harrison is now with him. The group also praised Russia for providing him shelter.</div>

It's also a test of your ability to respond appropriately to sticky questions. Your interviewer and prospective employer will side with your former manager, and view you as difficult to deal with.”<br />

Instead: Keep your responses professional and watch for trick questions.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Tell the interviewer what you would change.</b><br />
<b></b>Sometimes interviewers will ask you what you might change about a prospective employer, and it can be an opportunity to bring out some ideas you might have. But keep it constructive, and wait until they ask, says Ronald Kaufman, author and executive coach. “Telling them things you would change about their company is arrogant and implies you might be a disruptive employee,” Kaufman says. “As an outsider, you don’t know my needs, my budgets, my problems, and telling me what you would change is a major turn off.”<br />

Instead: Wait to offer suggestions until the interviewer asks for them, and even then, keep them brief and constructive while stressing that you know you don’t have all the information.<br />

<b>3. Comment on your interviewer’s appearance. </b><br />
Whether you like the way your interviewer looks or not, keep it to yourself. Even “well, you look nice today” is inappropriate, according to Evans. Commenting on how people look when you’ve just met them can be a signal that you aren’t concerned with social boundaries or are rude. Comments about appearance are on the “interviewer’s red flag list,” Evans says.<br />

Instead:   Keep social commentary to a minimum, and stick to safe and general topics, such as the weather or traffic, before you get into the interview.<br />

<b>4. Denigrate the organization you’re applying to. </b><br />
Even when you want the job, it’s possible that things you say make it sound like you think you’re better than what the company deserves. “If you make it appear as though the organization where you are applying is not up to speed in terms of technology or that its facility is lacking, you will alienate the interviewer,” says Cheryl Palmer, a career coach. “You need to give the interviewer reason to believe that you are the best person for the job and that you really want to work there.”  <br />

Instead: Find ways to talk about how you’ll be a good fit for the company, rather than implying you’re a superhero for offering to help the organization out of a jam.<br />

So what constitutes a safe PIN number? A new study from DataGenetics lists the top 10 most-used PINs. And because they are the most commonly used PIN numbers, they are by default the least safe PINs.</div>

According to Forbes, the United States and Mexico are home to the greatest number of credit and debit card thefts around the globe. Forty-two percent of Americans say they have suffered from some form of card fraud, a study from Aite Group and ACI Worldwide shows.</div>

<div>
The Department of Justice says that about 10 percent of all Americans suffer from credit card fraud each year and another 7 percent have their debit cards hacked or stolen. More than $5.5 billion in theft is attributed to credit card fraud each year.</div>

<div>
The DataGenetics study says that credit and debit card thieves are able to successfully guess more than 25 percent of stolen card PINs within 20 attempts.</div>

<div>
And no surprise: the worst PINs are those that are overly simple or sequenced, i.e. “1234.”</div>

WTOP notes that the best PIN numbers are those “with no special significance.” And in the case of the study, DataGenetics said the least used PIN is “8068.”</div>

His predecessor, Ron Johnson, had tried to remake Penney into a more fashionable department store, but shoppers rejected the concept and sales fell 25 percent last fiscal year.</div>

Wall Street analysts expect Penney to report that same-store sales declined 6.7 percent in the second quarter, while the larger sector is expected to report a 3.1 percent average increase, according to Thomson Reuters.</div>

Former sprint cyclist Erik Zabel, who admitted on Sunday to years of doping, has resigned from the Professional Cycling Council (CCP), an advisory body to the UCI, the governing body said on Monday.</div>

The German said he was "no longer the right person" to be a part of the CCP after coming clean about his past in an interview in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung.</div>

He admitted using banned drugs and illegal methods, including EPO, cortisone and blood doping, from 1996 until 2003.</div>

 The UCI said in a statement that Zabel had contacted the body's president on Monday to offer his resignation and to express his "deep regret for having lied for so long about taking performance enhancing substances".</div>

Zabel was among the finest sprinters in his sport and topped the points classification of the Tour de France six times until his retirement in 2008.</div>

<div>
He was recently named in a French Senate inquiry as a drugs offender.</div>

Zabel featured in the French report along with several other riders including the top two in the 1998 Tour de France - Italian Marco Pantani, who died of a drug overdose in 2004, and German Jan Ullrich.</div>

Apple’s iPhone regularly finds itself at the top of customer satisfaction surveys, but a recent study found that the tide is turning. In the American Customer Satisfaction Index’s first study of individual smartphone models, Apple’s iPhone lineup was topped by not one but two Samsung smartphones. The Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II were the ACSI’s highest-rated smartphones with a score of 84 a piece, good enough to just edge out iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, which each scored 82. Forbes noted that Apple’s iPhone 4 scored an 81 in the survey and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 had not yet launched when the study was conducted earlier this year.  </div>

Syria and Iran signed a deal this week to activate a $3.6 billion credit facility to buy oil products to shore up President Bashar al-Assad's war battered economy, officials and bankers said on Wednesday.</div>

The deal, which was agreed in May and will allow Iran to acquire equity stakes in investments in Syria, is part of Shi'ite Iran's broader support for Assad in his battle against a two-year insurgency by mainly Sunni rebels.</div>

Tehran has already provided military assistance to Assad, training his forces and advising on military strategy. Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters have also bolstered counter-offensives against rebels around Homs and Damascus.</div>

"This will help Syria to import petroleum products that the country needs," said a Syrian trade official, referring to the credit facility. Underlining the acute nature of Syria's financial problems, he said authorities had tried to set a ceiling of $4 billion on the deal.</div>

Syria is short of diesel for its army and fuel to keep the economy running, partly because of U.S. and European Union financial sanctions imposed after the crackdown on protests at the start of the crisis. Its main supplier of petroleum products by sea has been Iran.</div>

Another $1 billion credit line to Damascus has already been extended to buy Iranian power generating products and other goods in a barter arrangement that has helped Syria export textiles, phosphates and some agricultural produce such as olive oil and citrus products, trade officials say.</div>

"This will allow Syria to import Iranian products up to this ceiling, with almost half to buy electricity equipment for the sector," the trade official, speaking by phone from Damascus, told Reuters.</div>

Alongside the favorable deferred payment terms of those financing facilities, Damascus has been in talks for months to secure a loan of up to $2 billion with low interest and a long grace period, the official said.</div>

At one polling station in the eastern province of Manicaland, a key swing region, the queue of voters, many wrapped up in blankets, stretched for a kilometer (half a mile).<br />

"I got up at 4:00 but still couldn't get the first position in the line," said sawmill worker Clifford Chasakara. "My fingers are numb but I'm sure I can mark the ballot all the same. I'm determined to vote and have my vote counted."<br />

The monitors' verdict is crucial to the future of Zimbabwe's economy, which is still struggling with the aftermath of a decade-long slump and hyperinflation that ended in 2009 when the worthless Zimbabwe dollar was scrapped.<br />

The United States, which has sanctions in place against Mugabe, has questioned the credibility of the poll, pointing to a lack of transparency in its organization and pro-Mugabe bias in the state media and partisan security forces.<br />
<br />
However, if the vote receives broad approval, there is a chance Western sanctions may be eased, allowing Harare to normalize relations with the IMF and World Bank and access the huge investment needed to rebuild its dilapidated economy.<br />

It would also spark a rush to exploit Zimbabwe's rich reserves of minerals such as chrome, coal, platinum and gold.</div>
